Landscaping  in  Kensington,  Johannesburg

Kensington sits on the ridge east of Johannesburg's inner city, a suburb of Edwardian and inter-war homes, street trees that were planted when the suburb was young, and a community with a genuine sense of place. Gardens here are shaped by the ridge topography — many properties are terraced, stands slope, and the views from Kensington's higher points are part of what defines the suburb's character. This is not a suburb for template-driven garden design.

We work on Kensington gardens with a particular sensitivity to the suburb's period character. Older homes deserve gardens that feel at home alongside them — not designs lifted from a contemporary magazine. Natural materials, planting with heritage associations, terracing that works with the slope rather than against it, and features that enhance rather than overwhelm the period character of the property are all part of how we approach Kensington.

Kensington requires us to design with the period character of the suburb in mind. A contemporary garden imposed on an Edwardian home misses something important — the relationship between house and garden should feel consistent in spirit, even if we are installing new planting and new hard landscaping. We make choices — stone over concrete, established species over novelty plants, considered forms over trends — that reflect this.

The slope that defines many Kensington properties also shapes our technical approach. Terracing is both a practical necessity and a design opportunity — well-designed terraced gardens create distinct outdoor rooms, frame views, and give smaller stands a sense of depth and interest that flat gardens cannot achieve.
